Long Overdue Weekend in Review…and Long too!

Why yes, I am aware that it’s Wednesday. And I’m just now writing about our weekend. But it was a double holiday weekend at our house (4th of July and my birthday) so we had a lot going on.

Friday night, we got the unexpected surprise of a date night! My mom offered to take both kids to her church’s VBS (Abby had gone all week), and as you know, we can’t get enough VBS in our house, so I happily accepted. We went to eat Mexican, where I spent the entire meal watching a wasp on the window across from our table. I had to know where it was at all times, lest it decide the window at our table was more appealing. Nothing can suck the romance out of a date night like a wasp sting.

Speaking of sucking the romance out of date night, after we ate, we went to Fred’s for dog food and CVS for diapers. Doesn’t that just scream romance? And coolness? ‘Cause we’re nothing if not romantic and cool. We finished up the evening at a book signing for a new local author. His name is Christopher St. Clair and this is his book…

Millie

You can read more about it (and support a local Alabama author by buying it) here. More on the book later…

Saturday morning, I went shopping for my birthday present (more on that later too), and then we headed out to a birthday party for one of Abby’s best friends. For the past several years, I’ve spent my birthday (or close to it) celebrating Abby’s bestie’s birthday. But that’s all right because there’s always really good cake involved. Really good cake makes almost everything okay…file that away for future reference.

This was Grayson’s first trip down a Slip ‘n Slide.

It might have also been his last. He liked the sliding part, but not so much the slipping part. Or the water in the face part.

There’s Abby and the birthday girl enjoying some liquid refreshment in the “hot tub”.

Cheers!

We left with two water guns as party favors…and really, “water gun” is not an adequate description. It’s more like a water bazooka. And I think they made it less than 12 hours in our house before they were taken away.

On Sunday, my actual birthday, we went to church for our patriotic musical and then home to do some grilling. Burge cooked burgers and hot dogs, while I made a fresh blueberry cobbler and homemade ice cream in lieu of birthday cake. It was a little slice of heaven, if I did make it myself. The kids had brought in a small birthday cake Friday night that they picked out with Nana’s help from the Wally World bakery. They opted for that over the fresh, from scratch cobbler (whose kids are those??), but they were all over the ice cream.

Because homemade vanilla ice cream…

It ain’t nothing but good.

The weekend continued on through Monday (gotta love sharing a birthday with a holiday…the party just keeps on going!), but since this is already one of the longest posts I’ve ever written, I’ll save it for another day. Happy Wednesday, y’all!
